Dr. James Stein's Career Path to Success

2/3 of the Three-Part Series (Part 2 The PHD)

Introduction

This is the second post of the three-part blog series, where I discuss Dr. James Stein's Path to Success. In the first part, I briefly discussed Dr. Stein's accomplishments In this second blog, I will discuss Dr. Stein's journey of transition and teaching and how/why he attained his PhD. In the last part, I will provide 3 tips including a bonus tip that was provided to me by Dr. Stein during a personal interview I conducted with him. If you have not read blog post one I highly encourage you to. Nevertheless, it is not required to read this post.

The PhD

Dr. Stein said his Master's Degree helped him confirm his passion for higher education and teaching but his Ph.D. confirmed his passion for research. Even as a full-time professor at Utah Tech University Dr. Stein continues to conduct research and publications. Dr. Stein told me his goal is to continue to contribute as much information as he can to the study of Relationships and Human communication "Through Instruction, Research, and Community Outreach" (Stein 2024). Viewing Dr. Stein's statement of that on his website is one thing but hearing him explain it and his struggles of attaining his doctorate to get in the position he is in today is another.

Benefits of the PhD

Dr. Stein asked me if there is anyone considering continuing their degree in higher education and it is paid for do it but if you do not need a PhD to develop your career highly consider your choices for he committed 4 years of his life to Arionza State University teaching and conducting research. Dr. Stein told me getting PhD is not easy because it becomes a full-time job. Dr. Stein later stated he does not know anyone that has worked a full-time job while completing their PhD and everyone that he knew ended up dropping out. Dr. Stein told me it is not impossible to attain your PHD while having a full-time job but if you intent to teach higher education in addition to your PHD you would need to commit yourself to your research and getting experience teaching while studying which does not allow time for other commitments.

Compensation in High Education

Dr. Stein and I discussed compensation in higher education and he told me not to get into teaching if I want to make tons of money because that is not the case. Dr. Stein told me teaching higher education can make you enough money to survive but if you don't properly manage your money you will not be successful. Dr. Stein mentioned the benefits of working in higher education include quality, insurance, retirement plans, and a pension. When I asked for specifics of the pay difference received when getting his Docrate Dr. Stein told me it only was an increase of $20,000. Dr. Stein continued to emphasize that the increase was not given to him just because he attained his PhD but the time he has committed to the university and his resume which includes several published studies. Dr. Stein continued to tell me that I would have to get a PhD if I wanted to teach at a 4 year university but I would not need one to teach at a Community College.

Conclusion

Dr. Stein and I continued to talk about tips that he could provide me and anyone else seeking to teach at 4-year university.
