Dr. James B Stein's Career Path To Success
Dr. James Stein's Career Path to Success
1/3 of the Three-Part Series (Part 1 Career)
Introduction
In this three-part blog series, I will discuss Dr. James Stein's path to success. This blog series is based on Dr. Stein's publically shared information that he has posted to further his career such as his own personal website discussing his accomplishments, his LinkedIn, and several other published works. What makes the content I am creating about Dr. Stein different from the information you can gather on your own is that I will include information from a 45-minute interview I conducted with him and break down what I learned in digestible bites for you to understand and apply. In the first part, I will discuss Dr. Stein's accomplishments and how he became a professor. In the second blog, I will discuss Dr. Stein's journey of transition and teaching and how/why he attended his PHD. Lastly, in the third post, I will tie everything together with the 3 tips he provided me at the end of our interview. At this point in time, this three-part series will not consist of any audio or video recording of our interview for privacy reasons. Nevertheless, I will reference and possibly quote any information from their interview that I find to be relevant.
Jobs & Careers
When reviewing Dr. Stein Linkdein's Profile or his website's CV you see that he has quite the resume but this did not happen overnight. When beginning my interview I asked Dr. Stein how his career started and what jobs or careers he had done prior. Dr. Stein's response was surprising. Yes, Dr. Stein briefly mentioned several of his internships in sales and marketing but he did not go in-depth stating "I was not passionate about it and it was not what I expected. (Perez, 2024)" When I asked him to elaborate he told me 20/20 hindsight if he were to go back into the marketing or sales field he knows that he would excel but he was personally getting burnt out with the "New Jersey/ New York Hustle" mindset of consistently having to work day in and day out and not feeling like he was making an impact in the corporate world. At that point, that was when my question changed to "Why Communications?"
Why Communications?
Dr. Stein said when getting his bachelor's degree he always knew he wanted to be a Communication Major and work in the field but he just did not know where. Dr. Stein told me living in Jersey it was easy for him to find entry-level positions but he did not feel purposed. Dr. Stein told me one night while he was living in his parent's basement he felt he was meant to lead and had a passion for teaching and mentoring others so he researched. How to become a college professor. Dr. Stein said when he learned all he needed was a Master's Degree and transferable experience he knew he could do it.
Conclusion
As you know Dr. Stein would not be a Doctor without attaining his Ph.D. For more information on the motivation behind that please review the 2nd Part of the Series (Part 2 "The PHD").
