Dr. James Stein's Career Path to Success
3/3 of the Three-Part Series (Part 3 Life Tips)
Introduction
This is the third post of the three-part blog series, where I discuss Dr. James Stein's Path to Success. In the first part, I briefly discussed Dr. Stein's accomplishments In this second blog, I discussed Dr. Stein's journey of transition and teaching and how/why he attained his PhD. In this part, I will provide three tips that Dr. Stein provided me and anyone else seeking to teach in higher education.
Three Life Tips
Start Now
Dr. Stein said when it comes to teaching higher education and applying for places in the real world they want you to be published and have real-life experiences. Dr. Stein said he recommended that any of his students who are planning to teach higher education begin teaching and researching while they are in school so that they have applied experience.
Manage your Finances
Dr. Stein said finances and managing your money are important to understand in any career you choose. Dr. Stein said he personally maxes out his Roth IRA and is impressed with Utah Tech's benefits packages but every place is different.
Interview your Interviewer
Dr. Stein said when it comes time to look for a place to work do not be afraid to ask questions, say no, and find the best opportunity for you and your life because everyone's circumstances are ever-changing and there will always be more chances to teach but remember what is important to you and what your values are. In other words, whether it is a job or a PhD program interview the interviewer and know what you are applying for.
Bonus Tip- Pack Light
Dr. Stein's bonus tip was "Pack Light". Dr. Stein told me that when it comes to higher education there are plenty of chances to teach out there but you can not be afraid to travel to them.
